I would like to nominate my mother, Nancy Haberman, for the Green Bay Packers Fan Hall of Fame. My mother is the biggest Packers fan I know. She is completely devoted to the Packers and has been since I can remember. Even in the worst of times she would find good is some part of the game. So far I could be describing many Packers fans, but not many have done what she has done. Since about 1960 she has written down every play of almost every game the Packers have played. There has to be a real serious reason for her not to be in front of the TV at her own little table during a Packers game. The TV sound is turned off of course; the radio is tuned in to the Packers radio broadcast. Everyone else in the room better be a Packers fan and paying attention to the game or they would be sent out of the room in no uncertain terms.
Mom would write the play-by-play action in a notebook using black ink when the Packers were on offense and using red ink when the Packers were on defense. When I looked through some of her old books I found that some of the games were written in pencil. Mom explained that when her and dad attended a very cold winter game she had to use pencil because her pens would freeze up.
I found one notebook with what appeared to be a coffee stain on the cover. Mom explained that dad spilled his coffee on the book during the "Ice Bowl" game. That is one of the games written in pencil because she was there.
Mom said she has always liked football and thinks it had something to do with being raised with four brothers. She said the reason she started writing down the plays, other than the fact that she enjoys doing it, was because for many of the early years of my parents marriage, dad worked 7 days a week, so it helped mom pass the time on Sunday.
I have included the first page of the " Ice Bowl" and the first page of Super Bowl I as an example for you to review. Notice the Super Bowl game is much more detailed with a lot of sides notes about each play. This is more typical of games that were written at home.
Thank you for your consideration of my mom, Nancy Haberman, for the Green Bay Packers Fan hall of Fame. I hope she is the type of fan you are looking for to fill this position.
Nominated by her son, David Haberman
